Another year. Another orbit. The planet slides back to approximately where it was when I arrived, and I'm marking the occasion the only way that's ever made sense to me — playing original music with three people I trust completely. Before I ever learned to play, I learned what playing is for. Reggie Wooten talked about fundamental vibration and sacred geometry. Samurai Celestial — Sun Ra's drummer — talked about sound as architecture, a way of organizing the invisible. Sipe taught me that the music is already playing before anyone touches an instrument — that the real work is learning to get quiet enough to hear it.
Those conversations didn't teach me technique. They taught me that music exists not to decorate life but to help people survive it. Everything I've done since has been in service of that question.
This quartet — Will Boyd on reeds and winds, Zack Page on bass, Alan Hall on drums — is where that question gets asked out loud. We play original compositions built in real time from instinct, attention, and decades of accumulated craft. The music moves through jazz, soul, free improvisation, and territories that don't have names yet.
Every atom in your body was forged in a dying star. Come listen to what happens when four of us remember that at the same time.
