Jarðarblót is a public ritual which aims to turn the emotional and social benefits of ritual towards responding to the climate crisis.
As of 2022, this ritual has been combined with an observance of Sigrblót, or Sumardag. This holiday marks the transition from winter to summer and the beginning of the growing season, and was a day of asking for success. We want to take this day to envision forms of abundance and success beyond agriculture, wealth and conflict—rather, we can envision forms of success that are intentionally antiauthoritarian and liberatory.
Honoring deities that represent our interests and the world around us allows us to express love, gratitude, and even grief in a supportive environment. Boasting allows one to take stock of what power is already available to them to approach the problem. The veneration of ancestors and well-wishing of descendants provides a way to express gratitude for the work already done, and to remember our motivations for the work yet to be done. Toasting helps to build community, because it is with many hands and diverse talents that change is made.
If you are bringing offerings, please stick to items that are compostable or safe to burn. If you're not sure what to bring, this year I am recommending ripping out an invasive plant to use as altar decor.
Drinks and food will be provided, with vegan and allergy-friendly options available. If you have an allergy or food intolerance other than wheat, nuts, soy, dairy or eggs, please alert me so that I can accommodate you.
We are using an alcohol-free wine alternative (Töst brand "rosé") for our libation but there will also be sugar-free and uncarbonated alternatives available. In the spirit of being eco-friendly, please bring your own drinking vessel; waxed cups will be available as a backup, with sharpies to label cups.
Nuts and Bolts:
The Sweinhart pavilion in Coventry Woods Preserve is closest to the Fernbrook access point and this is where I recommend parking. (Though if you prefer to take a long, scenic walk, more power to you.) The Fernbrook lot has two sections, so there is ample parking available. The shortest path on foot from the parking lot to the pavilion cuts through the fire ring, and the pavilion should be on your right once you're in the woods.

Reception at this location is poor and no wifi is available
Potable water is not available from any pumps on site, bring a water bottle with you; drinking water will be provided for all guests.
There is a portajohn available year round in the Fernbrook access point area.
This event has a hard start time of 2pm EDT, and we are aiming to end by 6pm. We welcome earlier arrivals (1:30pm) or later stayers (6:30pm) who would like to participate in setup and teardown.
