Japanese Dance Butoh Workshop
Join us for an immersive introduction to Butoh, the expressive Japanese dance form centered on transformation and embodiment. Open to +18, dance experience is not required! This workshop led by Pınar Sinka combines classical Butoh (Hijikata method) with contemporary improvisation.
Participants will explore movement, develop their own dance language, and connect deeply with body and breath through slow, meditative practices. Through imagery, improvisation, and somatic awareness, the workshop invites you to discover new forms of expression in a supportive and relaxed environment.

In this workshop led by Pınar Sinka, participants will have the opportunity to experience both classical Butoh through Tatsumi Hijikata’s Butoh Notation (HIJIKATA METHOD) and contemporary improvisational Butoh approaches.
The workshop provides a space for participants to explore new possibilities of movement and to develop their own unique dance language and bodily expression. Through Butoh’s katas (forms), image-embodiment, and transformation practices, participants generate new and original movements while attuning to the flow of music and their inner rhythms.
Exercises aimed at cultivating Qi, combined with slow, meditative, and breath-centered improvisational practices, allow participants to approach their inner experiences from a new perspective. Throughout this process, participants witness the emergence of embodied memory, subconscious emotions, and tacit knowledge held within the body. Butoh encourages a deep connection with sensations, dreams, and memories, supporting their expression through movement.
In Sinka’s workshop, participants not only develop an original dance language, but also experience a profound somatic process establishing a deep connection between mind and body through Butoh’s meditative, slow, and breath-centered movements.
