About this Event

YPE NYC tour: the past, present, and future of NYC's electricity grid

On this tour, we will travel together through the past, present, and future of NYC's electricity grid with our resident licensed tour guide, the inimitable Cullen Brown!
Beginning in the "First District" as named by Thomas Edison, we will explore how and why NYC is the first place you could buy power and light. Boarding the NYC Ferry, we will take a look at former (Kips Bay, Waterside) and current (Ravenswood, Astoria Energy, etc) power plants, steam plants (E 14th, E 74th, etc), as well as islands like Rikers, which will play a key role in the energy future if the Renewable Rikers proposal succeeds. Finally, on the way back south, we will see sites that will play a key role in bringing offshore wind into NYC, including RISE Light and Power and the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub.
