Back in late 2019, Peter Hill, a member of CAMRA' Dudley & South Staffs branch, set himself the challenge of visiting every one of the 4,429 pubs across the UK listed in the 2020 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. He now has only ONE left to visit! He has been planning for his final pub to be the Mermaid in St Albans on Friday 9 January 2026 - not merely because it's located in a fantastic ale city, but also because it serves one his favourite beers, Oakham Citra.
Peter intends to arrive at the Mermaid for noon opening time, where he will be interviewed by the local press. After that, he will then embark on a 1.6 mile crawl of eight pubs in St Albans he has never previously drunk in, before returning to the Mermaid for an evening of celebrations.
Everyone is invited to come along, for some or all of the day, and join this epic celebration of great pubs!
Below are the target timings, and we'd love to see you along the way...
12noon: Mermaid, Hatfield Road
2.30pm: Horn, Victoria Street
3pm: Victoria, Victoria Street (no cask)
3.30pm: Snug / Fleur de Lys, French Row (no cask)
4pm: White Swan, Upper Dagnall Street
4.45pm: Waterend Barn, Civic Close
5.30pm Beech House, St Peter's Street

Since 1984, Peter has drunk in excess of 57,775 pints in more than 24,424 pubs, travelled 400,000 miles and raised £35,000 by asking every publican to make a £1 donation (some give more).
Let's help him make ticking off these next eight a memorable occasion!
