Hi allIt's the first workday of 2026 again and time to work off that Xmas & NY excess!
We are returning to St Martins Battery to finish the marvellous work that we last did exactly a year ago, but work that has been carried on throughout the year by WCCP and Clive, one of our volunteers
Historically, for a long time this amazing structure had been neglected and has been the focal point for antisocial behaviour and criminal damage but by clearing it, not only does it look better, but thanks to involvement of Kent Police, Port of Dover Police, DDC and volunteers it has become better protected and used. The recent installation of an accessible footpath also gives us another opportunity to clear the remaining view :-)
This was a complex project to get off the ground, championed and supported enthusiastically by the EH Liaison Officer, Sarah Horan, and requiring consents from DDC and Historic England to work on the monument and additional permissions to close the car park for the day! We have very tightly controlled areas of work so there will be a comprehensive briefing prior to the start of the work day and before any work can commence.
St Martin's car park will be closed to the public but available for use by anyone joining the work party and as usual all PPE etc will be supplied. This is a muddy site in places so proper footwear is essential.
***Please note*** We will be meeting at St Martin's battery car park for this work day and not at the Drop Redoubt as usual.
I look forward to seeing you there!
