About this Event
Award-winning jazz vocalist and L.A. favorite Janis Mann is always ready to share her art, singing in the fashion she prefers: completely in the moment. The way she tells her musical stories and even the way she speaks come out through her here-and-now sensibility. She is direct and honest, and also emotional, empathetic, and humorous. Emotion can spring up suddenly like a chord change. Clear articulation and smooth execution are the qualities that jump out when she sings. The music calls the listener inside. In a live setting, there can be twists and turns depending on what vibe she feels with her musicians or perhaps what she feels inside at any given point.
She’s recorded and/or performed with Diane Schuur, Roy Haynes, Kenny Werner, Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Terrell Stafford, Dave Frishberg, Jack Sheldon, John Clayton, Alan Broadbent, the Caribbean Jazz Project, Laurence Hobgood and many other jazz luminaries in addition to her own legendary shows. Her nine record projects are a radio and streaming mainstay.
JazzTimes Magazine says, “Mann is not only one of the most skilled vocalists around, but one of the most alluring as well."
Pianist, composer, writer Kenny Werner: “A singer who is as adventurous and courageous as she is talented and musical.”
Janis is joined at her Sound Room debut with a trio of elite Bay Area jazz artists: David Udolf – piano, Doug Miller – bass, and Jim Zimmerman – drums.
