“Music has the power to make positive change!” We are proud to present Janice Allen-Brooks whose Heritage is of the Gullah/Geechee Culture and who has studied extensively the music of the Geechee people. Janice has shared this music to many nationally and internationationally with an emphasis on music historian Ms. Bessie Jones. Today we will sing, dance and learn the History of some of the music that inspired Janice and shaped her as she grew into adulthood. This session will also include songs from South and West Africa and Freedom Songs which really sparked Janice’s interest to sing at a very young age. You might love to purchase the book Step It Down by Bessie Jones and/or the accompanying album, Step It Down: Games for Children by Rounder Records as an added resource.
