A talk by an Associate Professor at the University of SouthamptonA lively look at the women writers who inspired, amused, or annoyed Jane Austen during an era when women novelists were outselling men.
The entire Austen family, as Jane described them in a letter of 1799 were “great Novel Readers, & not ashamed of being so”. In the period 1800-1817, when Jane Austen herself started publishing her own novels, women novelists were outselling men – and in some cases, earning more than them!
In this talk, Gillian Dow will introduce you to some of the women writers of Austen’s period who “diverted her exceedingly”, and others who most certainly did not.
Dr Gillian Dow is an Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Southampton and was Executive Director of Chawton House from 2014-2019. She has published widely on Jane Austen and her contemporaries and has a special interest in pan-European women writers and translation.
