About this Event
As Jane Austen wrote in Sense and Sensibility: "It isn't what we say or think that defines us, but what we do." So why not 'do' afternoon tea with a friend to celebrate 250 years since the birth of one of Britain's most loved authors, Jane Austen.
Join Willow Bough Tea Rooms and Catering and Only Make Believe for a celebration of Jane Austen with a themed afternoon tea, live readings of passages from a selection of her novels, and, if you book a premium ticket, a beautiful copy of a Jane Austen novel to take home.
The afternoon tea will include finger sandwiches (traditional or vegetarian), handmade scones with jam and clotted cream, and array of sweet treats that were typically enjoyed during Jane Austen's lifetime.
Clare has been running Willow Bough Tea Rooms and Catering for almost a decade, using her grandmother's recipes and techniques to make her traditional cakes and afternoon teas.
Jude opened Only Make Believe earlier this year following a career in teaching and sharing her love of books! Only Make Believe is, a teeny tiny, fiction-led bookshop, in the beautiful setting of Merton Abbey Mills, where you can browse, banter and buy all things bookish.
Merton Abbey Mills is a corner of south west London with a fascinating history and connection to arts and crafts. Sitting on the River Wandle, once London’s hardest working river, Merton Abbey Mills was once home to Liberty’s Print Works, with William Morris’s textile and design company based just a short walk up the river (now Colliers Wood High Street). Today Merton Abbey Mills is full of creatives and independent businesses.
