With a technical fluidity on his instrument, James Owston is a bassist and previous BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist who stretches stylistic boundaries and pushes the instrument to its limit, with a sound that is stylish, virtuosic and captivating.
With firm roots in bebop and the jazz tradition, James is heavily influenced by Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Charlie Haden, and modern masters including Larry Grenadier and Robert Landfermann. James was a 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist, performing at the Queen-Elizabeth Hall with Gwilym Simcock and Asaf Sirkis. James has collaborated with Paul Dunmall, Jay Phelps, Alex Clarke, Mark Lockett, Neil Yates, John Turville, Roger Manins, Emily Masser, Xhosa Cole and many more.
At Steamin', James leads his quartet with music from his most recent project, Songs from an Imaginary Childhood, written as part of the Jazz Central Mentorship programme in 2023, where James worked closely with saxophonist Trish Clowes. The music is inspired by the juxtaposition of seeing the world as it is now and as it was seeing it as a child.
