The Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science invites the public to a special Historian in Residence lecture by Dr. James MacLeod of the University of Evansville.
In his presentation, “Reverend John M. Caldwell and the Civil Rights Struggle in Evansville,” Dr. MacLeod will explore the long-overlooked history of the African American civil rights movement in Evansville from the 1940s through the 1970s. The talk will focus on Reverend John M. Caldwell, one of the city’s early civil rights pioneers, whose leadership played a vital role during this transformative period.
Dr. MacLeod, the Museum’s 2026 Historian in Residence, has been a member of the University of Evansville’s History Department since 1999. A dedicated scholar of local history, he is the author of several works, including studies on Evansville during World War II and cartoonist Karl Kae Knecht. His most recent book, Lost Evansville (1945–1975),examines the profound social and physical changes that shaped the city in the mid-20th century.
Dr. MacLeod earned both his MA and PhD from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
