About this Event
Joyce’s Dubliners, his most accessible work of fiction, is considered by many to be one of the most fully-realized short story cycles in English. Proceeding through the collection, we will discuss Joyce’s presentation of the legacy of Irish history and his exploration of Irish culture, including the influence of Catholicism, the impact of British colonialism, and the constructions of gender roles during the time period. Finally, we will consider Joyce’s use of narrative technique, allusion, and figurative language and the ways he employs leitmotif and other devices to link the stories in the cycle.
Ed Walkiewicz was educated at Yale, Columbia, and the University of New Mexico. He was the holder of an endowed professorship at Oklahoma State, and he has authored or co-authored two books, and numerous chapters, articles, notes, and reviews on modern and contemporary American and Irish literature. He also has presented scholarly papers on Joyce’s fiction at international conferences and taught it in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education courses.
