About the Show - A Few Words from Clay Mottley
James Taylor and Billy Joel were staples on the radio as I was growing up. I started out taking piano lessons before switching to guitar, and it felt like if you wanted to be considered a real musician, you had to learn their songs. In fact, “Sweet Baby James” was the very first song I taught myself on guitar.
What sets these two apart from many other hitmakers is that they didn’t peak early—they kept evolving. Their later work is every bit as powerful and meaningful as their early hits, and the stories behind the music only deepen that connection.
In James & Joel, I take the audience on a journey through the stories behind their most beloved songs—as well as a few of my favorite deep cuts—sharing insights from the artists themselves and offering my own interpretation of these timeless classics.
