About this Event

This event is part of Jamaica Bay Festival and City of Water Day.

See Jamaica Bay through fresh eyes! This creative outdoor experience blends art, storytelling, and nature exploration. Guided by Megan Elevado, participants will discover the ecology and history of the Bay during a relaxed nature walk while engaging with art techniques, creative prompts, and observation activities designed to deepen connections to the water and this unique urban ecosystem.

Participants will receive a free sketchbook* and share art supplies to record their unique perspectives.

All artistic levels are welcome!

*Sketchbooks are limited and will be distributed based on order of arrival.

Location details: The event will start at The Nest, a small, white building located just inside the entry to Floyd Bennett Field (FBF). The entry to FBF is just before the Marine Park Bridge.

After a brief introduction and distribution of supplies at The Nest, we will take an 8-10 minute walk down to Floyd Bennett Beach. All activities will take place on the beach.

**Please do not drive down to or park near Floyd Bennett Beach. Public vechicles are restricted in this area. Please park in the public lot near The Nest.**

What to bring:

  • Feel free to bring your own sketch book and art supplies. (Even if we run out of sketchbooks we will still have materials so everyone can participate in activites.)
  • An easy-to-carry beach chair or towel if you don't want to sit directly on the sand. We will take time to sketch, write, and observe.
  • Sun protection
  • Proper footwear. Be aware that there can be a lot of broken glass and shells on the beach.

Accessibility:

  • The walk from The Nest to Floyd Bennett Beach is an 8-10 minute walk on a paved road.
  • Bathrooms: are available at The Nest, in the public parking lot, and one port-a-potty at the entry to the beach.
  • We will be walking along the beach. There will be uneven ground with varying stability.
  • This experience includes both walking and moments of pause for activities.
