Winter in Bangkok means one thing — Jakob Dinesen is back.
Each high season, the Danish saxophonist returns to Thailand and assembles a new quartet from musicians he respects and trusts.
No two editions are the same. For this Bangkok chapter, he brings together a powerful international lineup — Denmark, Poland, USA, Thailand — meeting in real time at Smalls.
This is not a touring package band. It’s a living conversation.
🎷 Jakob Dinesen – Saxophone
Born in 1968, Jakob Dinesen is one of Denmark’s most essential and versatile jazz musicians. Educated at Berklee College of Music and Copenhagen’s Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium, he belongs to the rare generation that builds on jazz tradition without being confined by it. His sound carries echoes of the masters, yet remains unmistakably personal — lyrical, harmonically grounded, and rhythmically fluid.
Over decades, Dinesen has collaborated with major international figures including Paul Motian, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Gomez, and Jakob Bro. His recordings span straight-ahead, post-bop, and contemporary European jazz, and his recent album Slow Flow earned Jazz Release of the Year at the Danish Music Awards Jazz.
He returns to Bangkok each winter not to recreate past performances, but to create something new.
🎻 Bartosz Dworak – Violin
Polish jazz violinist Bartosz Dworak is one of Europe’s most accomplished modern improvisers. Winner of the Grand Prix at the International Zbigniew Seifert Jazz Violin Competition, as well as top prizes at Jazz Juniors and Lotos Jazz Competition, Bartosz has built a reputation for bringing violin fully into contemporary jazz language — not as ornament, but as a leading voice.
His tone is fluid and expressive, capable of soaring lyricism or razor-sharp rhythmic phrasing. Through his Bartosz Dworak Quartet and international collaborations, he bridges European harmonic sophistication with deep jazz swing. A familiar presence at Smalls through projects like NUWAVE Trio, Bartosz thrives in small-group settings where interaction drives the music forward.
🥁 Shawn Kelley – Drums
An American drummer and educator based in Bangkok, Shawn Kelley has spent over two decades in Southeast Asia building a reputation as one of the region’s most versatile jazz drummers. A graduate of The City College of New York, where he studied under Ron Carter, John Lewis, and Sonny Igoe, Kelley combines deep traditional grounding with openness to experimentation.
He has performed and recorded with an extensive list of jazz legends including Ernie Watts, James Moody, Toots Thielemans, Eric Marienthal, Jeff Lorber, and many more. His drumming ranges from subtle brush nuance to explosive swing, always attentive, always responsive — a player who listens as deeply as he plays.
🎹 Warit Techakanont – Piano
Thai pianist, composer, and educator Warit Techakanont is one of Bangkok’s most prolific and forward-thinking jazz voices. Currently teaching at Rangsit University, he won 1st Prize (Jazz Category) at the Rubato International Piano Competition in 2022 and has performed across Japan, South Korea, and Europe, including an upcoming appearance at Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Warit’s recorded output is remarkable — over 30 albums and numerous EPs and singles released across major streaming platforms. His playing blends harmonic sophistication with bold improvisational instincts, moving seamlessly between lyrical passages and daring rhythmic exploration. In quartet settings, he balances structure with spontaneity, shaping the ensemble from within.
Four distinct musical languages.
One shared vocabulary.
Tradition meeting invention. Europe meeting Bangkok. Structure meeting risk. This is what happens when serious musicians sit down and listen to each other.
