It’s the Excess Nutrients! Coastal Water Quality Trends and Future Issues.

Coastal water quality data, collected by volunteers for the last twenty-five years, will be presented with discussion of trends. We will look at positive changes following the restoration of flow in the Muddy Creek. Lastly we will consider the ways that sewering, minimizing fertilizer use, and thoughtful land use, all work together to increase the health of our marshes, eelgrass beds and waterways. Climate issue will be addressed.

Sarah Griscom completed her BS in Earth and Marine Science and worked as a Marine Geologist for the US Geological Survey. She has a PhD in Coastal Oceanography and was a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health where she focused on contaminant metals in coastal bivalves. She taught undergraduate oceanography and high school sciences then in 2015 was hired by Pleasant Bay Community Boating to build an environmental science program to compliment their sailing program. The program evolved into an award-winning summer day-camp. Sarah presently works part-time with the Town of Chatham, volunteers on several committees, and is focused on communicating risks from climate extremes and building a more resilient community.
