About this Event

Discover the beauty of natural colour using different parts of plants including flowers, leaves and roots as well as food waste to colour textiles and paper in this relaxing and environmentally engaged series of workshops.

Join us at The Baths in Hackney Wick to be guided on a wide range of natural dye techniques that unearth the potential of plant colour. Each workshop will cover a different technique and you will leave with not only a knowledge of plants and dyes, but also with beautifully dyed fabric in a range of colours.

Itajime Shibori using Natural Dyes

Shibori (しぼり/絞り) (from the verb root "shiboru" – "to wring, squeeze or press") is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces a number of different patterns on fabric. On this session we will learn about Itajime and Kanoko Shibori and will explore some different ways of tying, pinching and folding fabrics to get a range of exciting patterns.

We will also learn how to extract pigments from food and garden waste and to make a dye bath to dye our shiboris in them. Materials will be provided, but feel free to gather in advance and bring some onion skins, avocado pits and skins, pomegranate skins and/or used tea bags, sumac flowers, nettles, buddleja (aka butterfly bush) to extract colour from.

I will be showing some samples, giving some natural dye and shibori tips and sharing some basic -and not so basic!- information regarding natural dyes, including some good ways to prepare fabrics for dyeing and what are the fibres that best take natural colour. Please bring a notebook and a pen if you fancy getting a bit technical and take some notes for reference, anyhow the class will be very practical and fun :)

This is a family friendly workshop and beginners as well as more experienced participants are welcome to join.
