It’s Rex Manning Day!For those who grew up in the ‘90s, many films helped define that decade. Many of those are considered classics now. But at the time, one small indie teen comedy slipped under the radar, barely getting noticed when it came out. As years went by, it became a staple of the late 90’s cable and home video market, finally finding a following among teen fans. Now, over 25 years later, it has gone from barely seen when originally released, to beloved cult favorite of that decade.
That film is EMPIRE RECORDS. A true day-in-the-life film (like Dazed and Confused, all the events take place in one day), the film captures the comings and goings, the fights and the affairs, the laughs and loves of a small independent music store. The shop is in decline, as is the music industry with it, and these are the last days before the coming internet will change how we look for music and signal the end of music stores completely.
But the shop has one chance of survival. And his name is Rex Manning. When local musician turned national rock star Rex Manning agrees to do an in-person signing/performance, the store sees its last chance to gain press & attention and make enough money to stay open. But can the group get past personal differences (and Rex’s washed up prima donna cockiness) and make it work?
To this day, die-hard fans of the movie still celebrate April 8th as “Rex Manning Day”, the day in the movie when he comes to town.
Featuring early breakout performances by Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, and Robin Tunney, and anchored by a legendary ‘90s soundtrack, this is one of the definitive ‘90s coming-of-age comedies.
