About this Event
In partnership with Islington Council,
This walk will be a mix of history, ecology and community. We'll learn about the history of the streets that disappeared when the park was developed in the 1950s and see the memorial to the 21 men from one street who lost their lives during the First World War. We'll take a look at the ecology pond, opened in 2010, and try to spot dragonflies.
The Whittington Park Community Centre, in the historic Hocking Hall provides a community focus for the park including the 4H – Hops, Herbs, Health and Happiness – community garden which we will admire as well as learning about the history of the centre. We'll then take a woodland walk round nearby Foxham Gardens with its wide variety of trees.
And, of course, we'll learn more about the park's namesake, Dick Whittington, and his connection with Archway as well as trying to answer the question as to whether he really had a cat!
The walk will take approximately 70 minutes and there will be a chance to socialise over tea or coffee at the end. Meet at 11am just inside the Holloway Road entrance to the park, close to the topiary cat.
