ISANG BAGSAK is a Tagalog phrase that translates to “one down” or “one fall”, meaning “when one of us falls, we all fall”. Used by both Filipino manongs during formation of the United Farm Workers in California and anti-martial law activists in the Philippines, it is an expression of solidarity and collective liberation.FIRM and Indigenous Roots invite community members to join us at an event on Saturday, November 2 at the Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center. Program will run from 12 to 1:30 pm. Space will remain open for discussions, prayers, art, and food until 3 pm.
At this event, we will continue the celebration of Filipinx American History Month by practicing Undas (Day of the Dead) traditions, honoring our ancestors alongside lives lost after one year of genocide in Gaza and showing solidarity with the Palestinian people with whom we share a colonized history.
Program inclues:
* Poppy flower arts and crafts activity for all ages
* Free Filipinx and Palestinian food
* Stories of the Philippine-American War
* Poetry and reflections on Filipinx-American / Palestinian solidarity
In keeping with Day of the Dead, there will be an altar / ofrenda for people to leave offerings to ancestors and lost lives (example offerings: photos, favorite foods, art, flowers, sentimental objects).
The event is FREE and open to everyone. No RSVP required & masks encouraged!
