About this Event

We are hosting a Career Fair for our mid-to-senior career level Appeals Officer positions within the Independent Office of Appeals on September 25th and 26th in Oakland, CA. We are seeking candidates for mid-career GS-11 to senior-level GS-15 professionals. During this event, we will be discussing our available positions and interviewing candidates.

Who is the Independent Office of Appeals?

The Appeals Mission is to resolve federal tax controversies without litigation on a basis which is fair and impartial to both the Government and the taxpayer, to promote a consistent application and interpretation of, and voluntary compliance with, the federal tax laws, and to enhance public confidence in the integrity and efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service.

About the Appeals Officer position:

As an Appeals Officer, you will hold conferences and negotiate issues with taxpayers or their representatives to resolve tax disputes. Many will involve large cases with multiple complex tax issues with over 10 million dollars in dispute. You will work in a team environment that fosters and promotes effective communication and problem solving to accomplish team goals and objectives.

To qualify for the Appeals Officer position: You must have at least one year of specialized experience*, which includes, but not limited to:

  • Applying tax law or accounting principles to resolve tax issues;
  • Applying current and past Internal Revenue Code and related laws, tax laws, court decisions, regulations, accounting principles and practices to analyze accounting documents, books, and records specifically to resolve tax disputes;
  • Interpreting the law in situations where there are uncertainties or conflicts in statutes, regulations, case law, precedence or other guidance to determine and apply the appropriate intent of the law in tax situations;
  • Conducting legal research and applying the law to tax situations;
  • Applying the hazards of litigation to the facts and circumstances of tax disputes;
  • Providing tax law advice or guidance to taxpayers, clients or employer;
  • Verbal, written, and/or virtual communications, preparing and conducting presentations, public forums, briefings, training, etc. regarding tax related issues;
  • Mediating/Negotiating the resolution of tax disputes between government and business or individual taxpayers.

*Note: You may be able to substitute education for specialized experience for the GS-11 graded position (e.g., Ph.D. or LL.M degree).
