Terrace Hill to Present Program titled Iowa: Portrait of the Land, presented by Larry Stone.
About this Event

Terrace Hill, Iowa Governor’s Residence and National Historic Landmark, has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit organization to host a free, educational presentation entitled Iowa: Portrait of the Land presented by Larry Stone, on Monday, March 10 at 5:00 pm in the Terrace Hill Drawing Room.

Based on Larry’s award-winning Earth Year 2000 book for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, “Portrait” is a reminder to Iowans of the rich history of their natural resources, with an appeal for protecting that heritage.

Larry Stone’s boyhood fascination with the creeks and woodlots on his family’s southern Iowa farm brings authenticity to his nature photography, writing and lectures. With degrees in biology and journalism, he also understands the natural world and can communicate the wonders of outdoor experiences. During a 25-year career with the Des Moines Register, from 1972-1997, Larry traveled throughout Iowa, sharing stories and photos of the state’s natural treasures.

Since leaving the Register, Larry has written five books. His work also has appeared in a number of environmental magazines, and he often gives programs on natural resources conservation. He has received awards from several conservation organizations. Larry is a member of the Clayton County Conservation Board and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Larry and his wife, Margaret, live near Elkader, where they manage woodlands, native prairie and reconstructed prairie on a farm along the Turkey River. Larry also operates a small business specializing in natural history books.

This is a free program, but advance registration is required as space is limited. Please register through Eventbrite or contact Allison Wergeland, Terrace Hill Communications & Events Coordinator, at 515-281-7205 to make a reservation.
