About the Jerusalem Orchestra
The Jerusalem Orchestra East and West draws its spirit from the rich cultural dialogue that has flourished for thousands of years in the very city it calls home. Rooted in Jerusalem’s unique history of coexistence, the orchestra continually expands its artistic expression, welcoming more voices, more stories, and more traditions into its soundscape.
Guided by conductor Tom Cohen, the orchestra has crafted an entirely new musical language, one that bridges the classical harmonies of the West with the maqams and quarter tones of the East, all while honoring the unique essence of each tradition.
This cultural harmony is reflected in the music and in the orchestra itself: a vibrant ensemble of men and women from all religions, ethnicities, generations, and walks of life within Israeli society.
Over the years, TJO has shaped a distinctive musical identity. It has shared the stage with world-renowned artists from Israel and beyond, helped define what many consider the unofficial “Israeli sound,” and opened audiences—at home and abroad—to the breathtaking musical riches of a region that spans from Persia to Andalusia.
In 2022, TJO was officially named “Israel’s Leading Orchestra” by the Ministry of Culture—an honor that reflects its growing demand on both the national and international stage. Our night will include a talk with Tom about his original composition, The Diamond Chapter II, Songs & Stories Between East & West, comprising Jewish lyrics interwoven with Arabic melodies – a modern example of the ancient Jewish art of mashing up cultures.
About the Tel Aviv Arts Council
Young Patrons of the Arts Celebrating Israeli Creative Culture
The Tel Aviv Arts Council celebrates the creative culture of Israel by providing a venue for young creatives and lovers of the arts to gather while attending lectures and demonstrations by world class artists, performers, and technologists.
The common theme in our events is a playful exploration of the world around us and the search for something unique that expands our vistas and leaves one with a sense of wonder. All of our private events are non-profit, but professionally produced to provide attendees with a comfortable environment to engage with the arts community, and take place in various venues throughout our great city.
