Join the city for a hands-on invasive removal training and introduction to the Forest Rescues volunteer program.
About this Event

Get hands-on experience to tackle invasive plants! Join the city's Stewardship Coordinator for a free basic training to learn how to identify, monitor, and remove non-native, invasive plants commonly found in our backyards and parks.



Location

This workshop is in-person and will take place at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center (3740 Blenheim Blvd) with a field session in nearby Van Dyck Park.



Content covered
  • Forest Rescues program information and how to get involved
  • Invasive plant ecology, identification, mechanical removal, and disposal
  • Outdoor safety and herbicide tips

Attendees should dress appropriately for the outdoors. A waiver will be provided for anyone interested in participating in the field session (using tools, going off trail).

Forest Rescues information

Attendees who complete this training have the option to apply to become a Certified Forest Rescuer with additional completion of 4 volunteer hours. Once certified, Forest Rescuers are permitted to work independently in city parks to remove invasive plants in partnership with the city's urban forestry staff.

Info: Sherwood Center will open for attendees. Please find a seat and fill out a program waiver.


🕑: 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM
Presentation

Info: Presentation on invasive species, field safety, and the Forest Rescues program; followed by a short Q&A session.


🕑: 10:45 AM - 11:30 AM
Field Session

Info: Guided walk through Van Dyck Park to work on field identification skills and demonstrate invasive removal techniques with hand tools. Participants should dress appropriately for off-trail. Waivers are required for this part of the workshop (provided).


🕑: 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Optional Q&A

Info: Option to continue practicing identification skills or work on invasive removal with the Stewardship Coordinator.
