About this Event

Discover the art of whittling in this hands-on beginner workshop designed for anyone interested in carving their own small animals, figures or decorative objects from wood. Guided by an experienced whittler, participants will learn the foundations of this traditional craft in a relaxed and supportive environment. No prior experience is required, making this course ideal for those new to woodwork or curious about trying a creative new skill.

The session will begin with a guided introduction to our current exhibition Woven from a hundred flowers, where participants will explore a selection of carved wooden objects on display and gain inspiration for their own creations. Following the exhibition tour, you will learn essential whittling techniques using hand tools only. Topics covered include safe knife handling, wood grain direction, types of carving cuts, detailing, finishing techniques and ongoing tool care. By the end of the workshop, you will take home your own handmade wooden piece.

Please note:

- This workshop involves moderate physical activity, as all carving is completed by hand while seated.

- Participants must be 16 years or older.

- Closed-toe shoes are required, and clothing suitable for a workshop environment is recommended, as sawdust will be present.

- Participants are encouraged to bring their own facemask, protective eyewear and ear protection, although sanitised Personal Protective Equipment will also be available onsite.

- Lunch is not included. A 45-minute break will be provided, giving participants the option to bring their own lunch to enjoy in the workshop space or nearby courtyard, or to visit one of the many local cafés and Nepalese restaurants nearby.

This program is linked to our permanent exhibition Woven from a hundred flowers Georges River Council - Woven from a hundred flowers, offering a creative way to connect with the themes and stories presented in the gallery. The exhibition will be on display until 30 August 2026.
