Introduction to Urban Beekeeping and Honey Production

Sunday March 23rd, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

This IN-PERSON WORKSHOP will be hosted at Alemany Farm.

Instructors: SF Beekeepers Association

Come learn beekeeping basics, colony healthy and urban honey production. This two hour class will be hosted by members of the San Francisco Beekeeping Association and will cover the honey bee life cycle, how to identify and treat pests and diseases and an introduction to working with bees safely. Also learn how bees work together to make honey, pollinate flowers and maintain colony nutrition. The class will conclude with a guided tasting of honey from our local plants.

Instructors:

Geof Worcester A beekeeper since 2014, I maintain six hives in my sunny backyard a few blocks from Alemany Farm. I rescue swarms from overcrowded hives that have taken up residence in trees and on porches. I belong to bee clubs in San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, and Marin counties, actively staying informed on the latest beekeeping practices. I sell my Bernal Bears Honey in local stores and directly to customers, who enjoy visiting my hives. Grateful for my own mentor, I happily share my beekeeping knowledge with others and welcome visitors to my hives.

Lynne Rousseau For over two decades, I've been immersed in the world of beekeeping, maintained active hives and developed a deep appreciation for these remarkable pollinators. Beyond managing my own hives, I'm passionate about sharing my knowledge through educational outreach, from observation hive demonstrations and honey tastings at senior homes and schools to mentoring veterans through Hives for Heroes. My urban homestead reflects my broader commitment to environmental sustainability and provides year-round resources for pollinators. Sharing the wonders of bees and the taste of local honey, and witnessing the joy it brings, continues to fuel my passion for beekeeping and environmental education.

Suggested Donation: $35 - no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based and support the growing and distribution of free produce at Alemany Farm. We encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means, and in an amount that feels powerful to you - such gifts make workshops like these possible. We also do not want money to be a barrier to entry. Please reach out if you would like to attend but are unable to donate. If you can afford to make a bigger donation, your contribution will support the work of Alemany Farm and the opportunity for others with more limited funds to attend this class.
