This beginner-friendly class offers a hands-on introduction to the vibrant world of Ukrainian embroidery. Participants will learn basic stitches and patterns, and start a traditional motif. No prior experience is needed, just a love for textiles and cultural traditions.MATERIALS TO BRING:
A kit will be provided for the class project, but we recommend bringing a 6" or 8" embroidery hoop, small scissors, a thimble if you use one, note-taking supplies, magnification if you need it, and whatever else you might need to make yourself comfortable.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Lesia Pona, whose work your may have seen here at Lacis Museum back in 2023, is a master Ukrainian embroiderer from Lviv, in western Ukraine. Her artistic journey began in childhood, when her mother taught her needlework. Later, at the Institute of Applied Arts in Lviv, she expanded her skills into weaving and silk painting. It was in the early 1990s, during a mentorship with a distinguished folk embroidery master, that she was introduced to the intricate art of drawn-work embroidery (merezshka), skills that became central to her artistic focus.
