Dust off that untouched sewing machine and finally learn how to use it, all while making a sturdy tote bag! This beginner-friendly course will teach participants how to thread and operate a sewing machine. We will cover common stitches, seams, and techniques, and create a sturdy, customized tote bag (patterned after a Trader Joe’s tote). Materials are provided, but feel free to bring your own fabric if you prefer- any sturdy denim or canvas will work great.
If you have a sewing machine but aren’t sure how to operate it, or want some instruction, come learn in a laid-back group setting.
Skills taught include threading a bobbin, threading a sewing machine, sewing and backstitching, seam finishes (French seam and/or overlocking), "boxing corners" to give the bag a flat base, hemming, sewing "in the round," making straps (loop turning and/or double fold).
