About this Event

Learn the basics of sewing in this hands-on, beginner-friendly class. You’ll gain confidence using a sewing machine, reading and understanding patterns, fitting garments to your body, and creatively upcycling the clothes you already own. Through guided, step-by-step projects, you’ll develop practical skills while exploring your personal style and approach to making.

Projects include creating a zippered pouch, transforming button-up shirts into new wearable pieces, and building a personalized sample book of stitches and techniques that you can reference long after the class ends. Along the way, we’ll cover essential techniques such as seam finishing, hemming, and working with different types of fabric.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

I am Hilla Shapira, an educator, costume designer, and multidisciplinary artist. My work explores the relationship between everyday design and the body, questioning design norms and the political aspects of objects. I have taught courses on various topics at Wayne State University in Detroit, Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, Israel. Additionally, I have presented artistic projects in Israel, Europe, and the USA, including exhibitions at Art Basel in Miami, NY Textile Month in NYC, Jerusalem Design Week in Jerusalem, NY Jewelry Week in NYC, Little Berlin Gallery in Philadelphia, Depo2015 in Pilsen, Czech Republic, Neve Schechter Gallery in Tel-Aviv, Hansen House in Jerusalem, Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY, and Wasserman Projects in Detroit, MI.

My professional teaching experience is diverse in the substance, students, institutions, and group structures. I believe that each student has their way of learning, and the role of the educator is to be flexible and to communicate with students about the directions and structures that are suitable for each specific individual. I want to motivate students to create and be excited about learning while embracing challenges. My goal is to assist each student in finding their niche and place as an individual. I wish to learn from my students and the people around me. Different backgrounds bring complicated and rich discussions. I encourage my students to have curiosity about learning from and about others.
