THIS IS A FREE WORKSHOP | BYO MATERIALS
MEETING SUNDAYS 12:30-2PM
2/1-3/8, NO SESSION 2/15
SPACES ARE NOW FULL. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, YOU MAY ADD YOUR NAME TO THE WAITLIST
In this workshop, spread over 5 sessions, you will learn the basics of knitting, including casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and binding off. We'll also look at how to change shape for things such as hats and socks, as well as more theoretical concepts such as how to choose your supplies, pattern reading, and some basic troubleshooting. By the end of our class you will know what you need to know to be able to choose from a wide variety of beginner and beginner/intermediate projects.
Since each session of the class builds on the previous one, we recommend signing up only if you can commit to the full schedule. If you need to miss a class, please contact the instructor to arrange a make-up date, either in person or online.
Class Descriptions
Session one - In this class we'll learn two different methods for "casting on" or starting a project, as well as the knit stitch. We'll also discuss how to choose yarn for your project and the pros and cons of various fibers, and the different types of knitting needles.
Session two - In this class we'll learn the purl stitch and how to bind off and finish, and the basics of reading a knitting pattern. After this session you'll know what you need to know to make a basic dish cloth or scarf.
Session three - In this class we'll go over basic increases and decreases, techniques that allow you to shape what you're knitting so you can make something more than squares and rectangles. We'll also discuss gauge more in-depth, and why it's an important thing to consider when knitting clothing.
Session four - in this class we'll introduce cable and lace knitting, which are two methods knitters use to create a variety of textured stitches and patterns. If time permits, we'll also discuss knitting in the round.
Session five - Color work: we'll discuss some of the basics of working with multiple colors of yarn. We will also look at some basic troubleshooting.
You will need the following Supplies:
1 - Two balls of worsted weight yarn (yarn weight 4) in a plain pastel color. The pastel color is important because it will be the easiest to see your stitches. Please no black or dark brown/blue/green/gray.
Examples: Michaels Loops and Threads, $3.99 per skein
Lion Brand Wool Ease, $4.99 per skein
2 - Knitting needles, either straight or circular, size US 7 or 8 (4.5 or 5.0 mm). Do not get double pointed needles for this class.
Examples - Straight needles: $6.99 Circular needles: $14.99
3 - Scissors
Any scissors are fine, no need to purchase new ones.
4 - Yarn needle: $0.99
Either size should be fine, but if you're unsure go for the larger one.
5- optional - pen and notebook to take notes.
About the Instructor/Facilitator:
Rebecca Glass learned how to knit while on a semester abroad program in 2005 and has been knitting ever since. She enjoys making blankets, hats, and scarves - but not as much as she likes making socks. She is passionate about the knitting and fiber art community and started the Kutztown Fiber Arts group for area fiber artists to be able to meet and socialize in person. When not involved in fiber arts, Rebecca is a competitive historical fencer and avid reader.
