Learn from scratch to read the New Testament in the language of its authors – a powerful tool for Biblical study and deeper discipleship.
About this Event

What will I be studying?

You will join other students on this effective and well-reviewed module, which takes students from no knowledge of Greek to an elementary understanding which can help unlock the meaning of Biblical passages. This course covers the Greek alphabet, basic verbs and commonly occuring nouns, and builds towards an understanding of tenses and moods of Greek grammar.

Language learning is challenging, as well as faith-expanding, so you will need to be able to give some time to engage in exercises to practice what you are learning.

What are the details of the course?

This course will be taught over 8 Mondays:

5th, 12th*, 26th January

2nd, 23rd* February

2nd, 9th, 16th March

*Please note 12th January and 23rd February will be taught on Zoom.

Lunch is served at 12.30pm and you'd be welcome to join staff and students for lunch, followed by Prayer in the Day at 1.20pm, with teaching starting at 1.45pm and finishing at 4.30pm (with a coffee break).

You will be learning alongside students who are working towards Durham University qualifications, but as a Short Course participant you will not need to submit any wirtten work. Study sessions will include input from the module tutor, sharing the challenge of learning with other group members and looking at short extracts of the New Testament in its original language. Each session will involve some preparatory exercises.

A bout the module tutor – Amy Hole

Amy studied English Literature at Edinburgh University and the University of Amsterdam, and Text and Performance Studies at King’s College, London, before qualifying as a solicitor. After practising in the City of London she worked for 17 years as a writer and editor for Thomson Reuters, working on a range of publications in the field of employment law.

Amy came to Sheffield in 2010. She served in her local church as a lay Reader before coming to St Hild to study for an MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission – discovering there a calling not only to ordained ministry but also to teaching. She is currently serving her curacy at St Timothy Crookes and The Vine, Sheffield, alongside teaching at St Hild and elsewhere, and writing for Scripture Union.
