Blue Ridge Naturalist - Elective, 2 hrs

The Southeastern United States is home to an incredible diversity of freshwater fishes. This course will provide an introduction on how to identify the different taxonomic families, genera, and species of freshwater fishes that comprise this diversity in the region, using the fish assemblage of the pristine Bent Creek as a case study. Students should be prepared to wade into the water.

Patrick Ciccotto is an Assistant Professor of Biology and Chair of the Conservation Biology Program at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. He has studied the taxonomy, ecology, and evolution of freshwater fishes across three continents for over 15 years in both academic and government settings. Patrick has extensive experience teaching about fishes and aquatic ecosystems in the Southeastern United States to a diverse array of audiences.
