Introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Helping Persons Served Build a Life Worth Living

For many adults living with complex diagnoses, regulating emotions can feel like an insurmountable task. Many are left feeling hopeless and that their lives are not worth living. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive treatment that addresses pervasive emotional dysregulation as well as suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury. Initially developed for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, research shows that DBT is effective for a broad range of individuals struggling with emotion dysregulation.

This training will provide an overview of the foundational theories of DBT, its structure, and its treatment targets. It will describe the four modes of treatment and take a closer look at specific skills modules. Providers will learn why DBT is not suicide prevention, but rather it is a treatment designed to help the people they serve build a life worth living.

This presentation will be led by Emily Dreher. Emily Dreher is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Linehan Board Certified DBT Clinician with clinical experience providing outpatient therapy and in home crisis counseling. Her specialties include working with individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder using Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Prolonged Exposure. Emily is also an Adjunct Lecturer in the Applied Health Behavior Research graduate program at Washington University.

Behavioral Health professionals who attend may apply for up to 6 CEUs.
