In this fourth of our Pop-Up Introductory Classes, we will be studying and painting one of the important foundational subjects - the quintessential Winter subject: PLUM BRANCH AND BLOSSOM!
PLUM is one of the 4 basic subjects studied in traditional Po Mo Style of Chinese Brush Painting called 'The Four Gentlemen' and a perfect subject for first-time painters. The array of brush strokes in all of the Four Gentlemen subjects combined are said to have all the brush techniques we will ever need in Brush Painting. So, this class is ideal for new painters as well as experienced artists who want to hone their foundational skills.
Dr. Ning Yeh, my esteemed teacher says, "The five petals of the plum flower represent the five basic virtues: benevolence, courage, propriety, wisdom and faithfulness. The plum trees bloom during the harsh Winter. After the first snowfall, the Chinese poets used to ride into the forest to search for the early blossoms of the plum. It was an occasion for inspiration and wine. When the plum flowers are in full bloom, the entire forest becomes a shining sea of white and red blossoms".
In this beginning class, we will start with the basics of brush technique, ink application on rice paper and how to create a simple and elegant Plum composition using just ink initially. Then, if painters want some sparkle, they can graduate to metallic tones on natural Xuan or one of the many colored Xuan papers from OAS, like the Red with Gold Fleck shown above. Also, you can even paint your final masterpiece on one of the pre-mounted papers to be able to immediately showcase your Plum inside one of OAS's ready-made scrolls!
This step-by-step class is specifically designed for brand new painters and will be taught at a gentle pace with plenty of time to practice the various strokes. Space is very limited to ensure maximum personal attention. A CLASS RECORDING is included in the tuition to download for future reference and will be available post class.
A detailed supply list will be sent upon registration but, if you are brand new to Brush Painting you might be interesed in a "set" that would allow you to save money on basic painting supplies. Here are 3 supply sets from OAS to choose from for this class starting with the most budget-friendly:

Since this class will be hosted over the Zoom platform, you will need a basic knowledge of Zoom (how to navigate the Gallery vs. Speaker view, muting the volume, etc.) and a computer or laptop + a solid internet connection. The Zoom link and other important information will be coming from the host Leigha (not Eventbrite) so, make sure you remove any spam filters to be able to receive these from: [email protected].
Dr. Ning Yeh, my esteemed teacher reminds us: "What is it that makes Brush Painting magical? It is the same thing that makes life magical. It is the link that ties your hand with your mind; your heart beat with the rhythm of the universe."
I hope you will join me for this afternoon of FUN creativity!
