About this Event
Introducing the Care Aesthetics Research Exploration (CARE) project
An online event presented by The Care Lab (on Zoom), October 26 2023, 1.00pm-2.00pm (BST)
We invite you to join an open conversation around the key questions and challenges that drive the interdisciplinary CARE Project. The team, led by Prof James Thompson (University of Manchester), brings together academics and practitioners in theatre and performance, nursing, psychosocial studies and care work in partnership with the Birkbeck (London University), NHS Pennine Trust and The Whitworth Gallery (Manchester).
What would it mean if care were understood as a practice that holds aesthetic qualities? The CARE Project is developing a theoretical framework called ‘care aesthetics’ to better articulate care as embodied (something we do), crafted (something we refine) and made up of sensory experiences (something we feel). Leaning on various case studies and The Care Lab, the team is exploring what everyday instances of artful, crafted care consist of, whether in the work of healthcare professionals, artists, people working with communities or between individuals and their material environment.
This online event is aimed at anyone (academics, artists, healthcare professionals, carers or care recipients) interested in learning more about the project. There will be a short introduction and run-through of the work so far by James Thompson, research associates Kate Maguire-Rosier, Réka Polonyi, and artist in resident Jenny Harris, followed by a space to ask questions and discuss how the idea of ‘care aesthetics’ might speak to your own practice or interests.
Please book in advance.
Note this event will be recorded so please register on Eventbrite as a participant for the recording to be sent to you afterwards.
Finally, please get in touch if you have any questions or access needs: [email protected]
We look forward to seeing you there.!
