Learn how to make your own random weave basket using an abundant, natural resource in North America: honeysuckle vine. In this workshop, students will explore the intuitive form of the random weave, how to latch hoops using the God’s Eye method, and will leave with a completed basket or a basket far enough in the process to finish weaving at home. Whether you're a beginner or have some weaving experience, this workshop offers a perfect opportunity to experiment with an accessible and (sometimes) fickle material. Join us on Saturday, March 29th from 1-5pm for this unique opportunity. All weaving materials will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own tools or thick weaving materials to latch their basket if they wish, but this is not necessary. This event is being hosted by Lindsay McCarty, a sculptural basket weaver and part-time team member of Heritage Acres. Recently, she received an MA in studio arts from West Virginia University and her work draws inspiration from the mutualistic effort of returning our organic energy to the Earth. Her practice is rooted in ethical plant foraging and the primitive artistic craft of weaving, symbolizing our kinship with the environment in both life and death.
Safety note: Since this event is entirely outdoors, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring your own drinking water. Pre-registration is not required, but encouraged. There is a sliding scale tax-deductible donation to Heritage Acres, which helps fund our burial ground's operating costs, and allows us to continue to put on new programming for the public. Please send an email to [email protected] if you'd like to register or have any questions. If you've not visited with us before, please follow the directions on the website as GPS maps tend to send visitors down the wrong driveway: https://www.heritageacresmemorial.org/visits/#directions
