About this Event

Ye feelin a wee bit Scottish? Aye, me tae!

Ne'er tried Scottish Country Dance afore? Dinna worry, ye'll be guided!

Dinnay hae a kilt or ghillies? Nae bother!

Knew ye could gie Scottish Country Dance a go in Waterloo? Loads o fun!

Come Try Scottish Country Dance in Uptown Waterloo!

Join us for a fun, biweekly class designed for complete beginners. We’ll be dancing to live music on a regular basis, and while the class is high-energy, the footwork isn’t too complicated (this isn’t Highland dance or tap dancing!).

Please register here! Newcomers/First Timers always welcome!

In each session, you'll:

  • Practice some footwork
  • Learn and practice dance formations
  • Learn new dances every time. With over 22,000 dances in the Scottish Country Dance repertoire, there's always something new to learn — you'll never get bored!

No experience needed, and no kilt or ghillies required. Just bring a water bottle, comfortable clothes, and soft-soled shoes. If you already have ballet shoes, jazz shoes, or ghillies, even better! (Please no heels!)

You don’t need to bring a partner, but be ready to dance with others — Scottish Country Dance is all about community and fun!

About the teacher:

Claire began Scottish Country Dance in Lyon, France (her home country), and has never looked back! Her passion for Scottish Country Dance has taken her around the world, including Scotland, England, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Italy, Australia, the US, and, of course, Canada.

During Summer 2024, Claire earned the first part of her Scottish Country Dance teaching certificate at St Andrews in Scotland. She is currently working on the second part and is planning to become fully certified in St Andrews during summer 2026.

Claire has also competed several times, including leading the first North American Team to compete at the Newcastle Festival in the UK, bringing home two trophies in 2025.

She is now part of the organizing committee for the first North American Festival of Scottish Country Dance — a competition inspired by the Newcastle Festival, but held in North America.

About the musician:

Fiona McCairley is an award winning fiddler and holds an Honours Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University. A classically trained clarinettist turned fiddler, she has built a vibrant career as both performer and teacher.

Fiona directs the Guelph Celtic Orchestra and has done so since the beginning! Bringing together musicians and dancers of all ages, she shares the joy of Celtic tradition with today's audiences.

Passionate about keeping the music alive and thriving, Fiona is dedicated to creating welcoming spaces where people can learn, play and celebrate together. From lively ceilidhs to concert stages, she believes Celtic music and dance are meant to go hand in hand!
