Intro to Moving Water – Solo Canoe1-Day Course | Grade 1–2 White Water
Ready to take your solo canoeing beyond flat water? This one-day Intro to Moving Water – Solo Canoe course is designed for adults who already have some flat-water experience and want a safe, supported first step onto rivers.
You’ll build confidence on simple moving water, learn how rivers work, and develop the core techniques needed to enjoy solo canoeing now and into the future. Coaching is progressive, practical, and tailored to you—whether this is your very first taste of moving water or you’re consolidating early experiences.
What You’ll Learn
• Introduction to equipment for moving water
• Types of moving water and how rivers behave
• Safety briefing & self-rescue (with optional rescue skills practice)
• Effective forward paddling and driving the canoe
• Trim and edge control
• Breaking in and breaking out of the flow
• Ferrying (ferry gliding)
• Core solo paddling skills
• Identifying hazards, river signals, and on-water communication
• Plenty of useful hints and tips to improve efficiency and confidence

• Adults looking for their first experience of moving water
• Paddlers who want to move from flat water to Grade 1–2 rivers
• Anyone wanting to canoe independently, confidently, and safely on easy rivers
Pre-Requisites
• 18+ years old
• Some flat-water canoeing experience, including:
• Ability to manoeuvre the canoe reasonably efficiently
• Confident forward paddling
• A reasonable level of fitness
• Ability to walk on uneven ground and in shallow, rocky water
