Learn American Mahjong — 3-Week Introductory Series
Learn to play American Mahjong at Nest in Warren, Rhode Island, in this three-week beginner series, following the official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules. There will be time to also enjoy after hours shopping at Nest boutique.
Over the course of three weeks, you’ll:
Mahjong Week 1
- History of mahjong
- Learn the tiles and setup
- Understand how to read and use the NMJL card
- Learn the Charleston
- Get a general flow of game play
Mahjong Week 2
- Take a deeper dive into the Charleston
- Learn the rules of game play
- Play 1-2 games supervised
Mahjong Week 3
- Go over rule reminders and strategy
- Play 2 guided games with instructor support
- Be prepared to play with anyone at the conclusion of the class!
This series is perfect for brand-new players or anyone looking for a confident refresher. No prior experience is required—just bring your curiosity and get ready for a fun, social game!

Your Instructors:
We are Beverly and Emily, a mother-daughter duo and experienced Canasta and American Mah Jongg instructors. We’ve taught hundreds of students and are passionate about making these games accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Beverly is a retired teacher, principal, and special education administrator. Emily is a high school special education teacher. Our professional backgrounds in teaching, learning, and curriculum development allow us to break down mahjong in a friendly, approachable way.
