Whether you are a student startup with a brand new idea, a small business owner with a side project, or a seasoned business mogul, the Entrepreneur Workshops focus on a variety of topics pertinent to your journey. Sponsored by Pillsbury Law and hosted by the Office of Innovation and Commercialization’s The Basement, these workshops are open to everyone. Have questions about intellectual property (IP)? Attend this interactive session to learn the basics and many of the nuances that every business, entrepreneur, and inventor should keep in mind to protect their hard work. We will cover the "rules of the road" spanning patents, trade secrets, copyrights, and trademarks, including how to navigate the specific complexities of university-owned IP and technology transfer. Through ample examples and Q&A, you will learn how to avoid common traps that give away your valuable work, take practical steps to command your commercial relationships, and drive favorable outcomes for your intellectual property rights.
About the Speaker:

Ryan Smith ‘94 (Ph.D., J.D.) is presently a patent attorney and a mentor at The Basement, where he drafted the IP agreement (signed by UC San Diego) conferring to all UC San Diego student groups their exclusive IP rights free of UC encumbrance. Ryan regularly advises entrepreneurs and scientists about patent matters including patent prosecution, licensing, and due diligence issues. Ryan was previously an IP manager at the UC San Diego Technology Transfer Office, an early scientist at Illumina during its startup period, and a scientist at Amersham Biosciences.

MTS Trolley
The easiest way to get to the DIB is by taking the MTS trolley UC San Diego Blue Line and getting off at the UC San Diego Central Campus stop. The trolley stop is a short 1 minute walk to the DIB.
