This month, we'll be exploring the mridangam with accomplished percussionist and composerCurtis Andrews.
We'll learn about this essential South Indian classical drum, discover its central role in
Carnatic music, and experience a live demonstration of its intricate rhythms and techniques. This program is designed to introduce beginners to Indian Classical Music, as well as deepen the enjoyment and understanding for long-time fans.
Curtis Andrews brings a uniquely global perspective to Indian classical music, shaped by
decades of dedicated study across multiple traditions. Under the guidance of his longtime
guru Trichy Sankaran, Curtis has developed deep expertise in mridangam and South Indian
classical music. His musical journey extends far beyond any single tradition - from his roots
as a self-taught drummer in Newfoundland to extensive studies in Ghana, Zimbabwe, and
South Africa, Curtis embodies the interconnected nature of world music traditions.
An award-winning recording artist, Curtis leads multiple ensembles, including his world-jazz
group and West African drum ensembles. His philanthropic work includes co-founding a school in rural Ghana, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the communities that
shaped his musical understanding. Curtis brings both deep cultural knowledge and
exceptional performance skills to his demonstration of the mridangam.
