Build confidence, embrace failure and unleash your inner silly billy with this 6 week introduction to the art of Improvisation, with Wellington's premier improv professionals.Over 6 weeks you'll cover the core principles of improv. You will learn to:
- Happily accept offers to make each other look and feel good.
- Find the joy in failing together, so we can be bolder and surprise one another.
- Re-connect with your sense of "play" in a safe and welcoming space.
- Learn positive communications skills which foster collaboration.
This is a 6 week course for folks new to improv, or returning to it after a longer break. Classes are every Tuesday 7:15pm-9:15pm at the Aro Valley Community Centre, from May 12 to June 16. Registration covers the entire course.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
Austin Harrison is one of Aotearoa's most experienced improvisers and teachers with over 15 years experience. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from Victoria University of Wellington and is the current Artistic Director of the New Zealand Improv Festival.
Austin believes improv is a powerful connector which builds communities, boosts confidence and reminds us all how to have fun. He's taught improv in a variety of environments, from intermediate schools, right through to over-65s classes. He's an award-winning performer and producer, a founding member of PopRox Improv and has taken shows to the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
ABOUT POPROX
PopRox are Wellington's best-dressed improv company. Known for their slick production values, and bold story-telling they were the resident improv company at Circa Theatre performing monthly throughout 2024 and 2025. Their Production of improv Murder Mystery "Farce Onion" won a Director's Choice award at the NZ Comedy Festival in 2024 and they were shortlisted for the "Best Improv Company Award" at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards 2025.
THE STAND-BY LIST
PopRox firmly believes that improv is for everyone, especially when it comes to sharing skills and knowledge. So we're offering "the stand-by list" for all our workshops in 2026. We'll giveaway any spots remaining one week before this course, on a first-come-first-serve basis. No need to provide a reason, no questions asked. If the entry fee is a barrier for you to come along, then simply email [email protected] and we'll pop you on the SBL. Everyone on the list will be notified whether there was a place available for them at least 5 days before the course begins.
ACCESSIBILITY
Aro Valley Community Centre is wheelchair accessible.
There is cycle parking right outside, and the nearest bus stop is 200 metres away on Aro Street (STOP 6784), or 300 metres to Willis Street (stop 7711) via Palmer Street.
These classes are suitable for blind/low-vision learners and for those living with diasability, who have good verbal communication skills (this is key to the type of work we'll be doing).
