About this Event
No experience necessary. Following in the lineage of the quilters of Gee‘s Bend, this workshop will teach you how to piece and quilt textiles by hand. After an introduction to foundational hand stitching skills, we will explore color and composition by constructing and playing with the log cabin and house top quilt squares. Some textile materials will be provided for shared use but participants are asked to bring textiles from their own lives (clothing, socks, dish towels, bedding…) We will practice resourcefulness by creatively repurposing textiles that have already had a place in our daily lives, transforming them into new forms of warmth, comfort and storytelling. Join us to stitch together!
We will not work towards the goal of completing a full sized quilt during this workshop; we will piece quilt blocks and practice arranging, quilting and binding them into mini quilts (which have lots of potential on their own). You will leave with skills, materials and inspiration to keep working on your own.
Skills that will be covered are:
- how to make and sew with a thimble
- how to anchor threads, running stitch, backstitch, even backstitch and felling stitch
- construction and creative/intuitive composition of quilt squares
- making bias tape
- basting, quilting and binding of a quilt
Each student will be provided with:
- 12”x12” piece of batting material to practice quilting and binding techniques
- various needles and threads
- safety pins for basting
- clips and bias tape for binding
