Ever wanted to try charcoal but weren’t sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is your excuse to jump in.
Fair warning: it gets a little messy. But that’s part of the magic. There’s something deeply satisfying about smudging, layering, and pulling light out of darkness. Charcoal opens the door to rich, moody landscapes, striking portraits, and still lifes that feel alive in black, white, and every shade in between.
We’ll focus on the foundations of drawing through value, making this perfect for beginners, but also a great reset if you just need to get your hands moving again.
In this class, you’ll explore different types of charcoal, experiment with blending tools, and build a value scale from the ground up. From there, we’ll dive into techniques like blending, subtractive drawing, and observational sketching, all leading toward creating your own charcoal still life.
