Join us for a hands-on workshop to create stained bioglass! Learn about the art and science of bioplastics.
About this Event

Think about all the plastic objects you use on a daily basis—where did they come from, and what will their lifespan be?

Join Genspace for a hands-on foray into the world of bioplastics and sustainable design. In this workshop, we will explore the history, challenges, and future of plastics, experiment with a variety of DIY bioplastic recipes, and craft stunning translucent panels that mimic stained glass. Using materials such as gelatin, glycerin, cornstarch, and sodium alginate, participants will learn the fundamentals of bioplastic creation, including considerations like health, toxicity, and biodegradability.

Through guided experimentation, you’ll create your own flexible or rigid bioplastics and then use layering techniques and lots of color to design a unique, light-catching panel. Whether you’re interested in material science, sustainability, or artistic expression, this workshop will provide the knowledge and hands-on experience to inspire your own explorations in bioplastics at home.

We strongly encourage participants to bring their own molds (silicone works really nicely for this workshop). Otherwise, there will be opportunity to come back to pick up your pieces once they've dried up.

Meet the Intructor

Sarai Mena (they/them) is a Community Biologist from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Passionate about the intersection of science and art, Sarai has explored a wide range of bioart techniques, from painting with microbes to using bio-based materials in makeup. Their work at Genspace focuses on science accessibility, empowering youth in STEAM, and collaborating with other organisms (often millions of them) to make cool and beautiful things. With a deep interest in microbial ecology and ecosystem dynamics, they are always exploring new ways to highlight the intricate connections between organisms and their environments.
