Join us for a hands-on workshop to collage with and create your own biolaminates! Learn about the art and science of bioplastics!
The instructor will introduce the theory and contemporary practices of creating bioplastics, along with case studies at the intersection of art, science, and design. In the first half of the workshop, participants will experiment with collaging and fusing pre-made biolaminate sheets to understand the properties and possibilities of this biomaterial. The second half of the workshop will be focused on learning and adapting a kitchen-friendly recipe, a gelatin-based biopolymer.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own mold or casting surface (silicone molds or re-using containers such as yogurt lids). Please note that the recipe takes a few days to dry; work can be arranged for pick up from Genspace one week after the workshop.
This workshop is mask-required as a practice of community care.
M eet the Instructor
Fan Kong (she/her) is an artist and educator based in Queens, NYC. Her creative practice includes biomaterial experimentation, bookmaking, and printmaking. She is the founder of Craft Services (Instagram @fakefankong), working to build safe and inclusive spaces where participants can practice social change-making through the arts, science, and inquiry.
