On a distant planet, an alien rock band performs for their adoring fans when they're suddenly kidnapped by a sinister figure and his army. The four blue-skinned musicians—guitarist Arpegius, bassist Stella, drummer Baryl, and keyboardist Octave—are transported to Earth, where their memories are erased and their appearances altered to look human. Repackaged as "The Crescendolls," they become an overnight sensation under the control of the nefarious Earl de Darkwood, who has dark plans for the band beyond mere stardom. As they're manipulated into churning out hit after hit, a lone alien pilot who witnessed their abduction crashes on Earth to mount a rescue mission. Racing against time, he must free the band from their mind control before Darkwood executes his ultimate scheme—one that requires exactly 5,555 souls.
Directors Kazuhisa Takenouchi and Leiji Matsumoto create a unique cinematic experience: a feature-length music video for Daft Punk's entire Discovery album, telling a wordless science fiction story through pure visual storytelling and electronic music. The 2003 film's anime aesthetic, designed by legendary Space Pirate Captain Harlock creator Matsumoto, blends retro-futuristic spacecraft with contemporary music industry satire. Without a single line of dialogue, the narrative flows seamlessly from track to track—"One More Time" scores the band's kidnapping, "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" accompanies their transformation, "Digital Love" provides romantic longing. The hand-drawn animation is gorgeous, filled with Matsumoto's signature character designs and elaborate mechanical detail. It's simultaneously a love letter to anime, a concept album brought to visual life, and a meditation on artistic exploitation. The marriage of French electronic music and Japanese animation creates something truly one-of-a-kind.
Original format and audio experience of this film faithfully reproduced by The Revival House. Presented in 35mm film unless noted otherwise.
