“We always welcome diverse artists, but this marks our first time to feature art by chimpanzees,” says Raw Space Gallery manager Gabriela Hernandez. Painting is one of many enrichment activities offered at Save the Chimps, a 150-acre refuge providing lifetime care to over 200 chimpanzees retired from research labs, the entertainment industry or the exotic pet trade.
This exhibit features local artists Tim Sanchez, Gabriela Hernandez, Xaque Gruber, Barry Shapiro, Christina Bates, and Shotsi Lajoie, all of whom visited the sanctuary. Thank you to Ms. Hernandez for curating this exhibit.
Art-inclined chimpanzees painted acrylic-on-canvas abstracts, which the human artists used as models for their own abstract works. This collaborative process resulted in six unique large-scale adjoined pieces, the sales of which benefit Save the Chimps.
