This session will be presented by lawyer - linguist Sue Leschen who has 2O years experience of interpreting at these tribunals. The session will be terminology rich and will cover information relating to both applications to the tribunal for detention ("sectioning") of patients in psychiatric hospitals as well as applications to discharge including:
- Who is present in the tribunal: panel members, patient or nearest relative, medical personnel, legal representative, family members;
- What the interpreter's role is and what it isn't;
- Procedure at the tribunal;
- Applications to the tribunal : assessment, community treatment, discharge;
- Patients transferred to psychiatric hospitals by courts and prisons via restriction orders;
- Orders available to the tribunal: guardianship, conditional or absolute discharge; and
- Potential professional conduct and ethical issues for interpreters
